Q&A: The Difference Between “OM” and “ONG”

Student asks: “In other yoga classes, we chant ‘OM’, but in Kundalini Yoga, we chant ‘ONG’. Their pronunciation and meanings seem so similar—what is the actual difference between them?”

Answer: You are right—both OM and ONG represent the Creator, the Divine, and the primordial vibration of the universe. However, we can distinguish them through two primary lenses:

1. The Linguistic Perspective OM originates from Devanagari (देवनागरी), the script used for Sanskrit, Hindi, and Nepali. In contrast, the ONG used in Kundalini Yoga is written in Gurmukhi.

2. The Functional & Energetic Perspective

  • The Power of ONG (The Creative Manifestation): When we chant ONG, the root of the tongue presses against the upper palate. This physical action stimulates the pituitary gland, secreting vital essences and activating the Sixth Chakra (Third Eye). Simultaneously, it vibrates the Second Chakra, which governs creativity. When the Sixth and Second Chakras connect, manifestation occurs. It carries the Law of Manifestation, bridging the subtle fourth-dimension (and beyond) down into the physical third-dimension of Earth. It brings the ethereal into the material.
  • The Power of OM (The Infinite Stillness): OM is associated with stability and a state of “inertia” (in a peaceful sense). It is a seed sound that brings cosmic tranquility, much like the soul’s journey after death—leaving Earth to experience the peace of the universe. It represents the “Void”—the state before the Big Bang where nothing yet exists. While it brings peace, it is not designed to manifest things into reality.

The Wisdom of Yogi Bhajan: Yogi Bhajan once said: “Chanting ONG allows you to manifest and ground yourself in your daily life. This is far better than being a human trying to experience an ‘out-of-body’ state. You will return to that Universal Consciousness eventually anyway; for now, it is better to fully experience life on Earth.”

The Goal of Kundalini Yoga: The purpose of practicing Kundalini Yoga is not to become some sort of “superpowered being.” It is to help you fully inhabit your identity as a human being—to live as an elegant, optimistic, and prosperous person.

Sat Nam.

P.S. The image shows the symbol for OM in various languages. When I first visited Bali, I discovered the “Balinese OM”—I thought it was so cute, looking just like a dancing human figure! How many versions of OM can you recognize here?

Sat Nam🙏🏾👳🏾‍♂️
